Abstract

These sessions are proposed in memory of Brian Spencer (1928-2003), keeper in charge of the medieval collections at the Museum of London from 1952-1988. The premiere scholar of pilgrim souvenirs, a field which he almost single-handedly established, he published numerous article and catalogues on the subject. Beyond his exemplary scholarship, what set Brian Spencer apart was his great generosity and enthusiasm for the work and interest of others in medieval culture. These paper, given by scholars who either worked with or corresponded with Brian, cover a wide range of topics including pilgrim souvenirs, seals, secular badges, and more.
