Abstract | This session aims to examine the legacy of Ann Warren's formative work on English anchoritism and interrogate her findings in the light of more recent research within historical, literary and gender-study contexts. In particular, it aims to appraise the accuracies and/or inaccuracies of those paradigms of the anchoritic life as produced by Warren and earlier scholars such as Mary Rotha Clay, and discuss how the reception of her findings may have shifted, and will continue to shift, in the context of contemporary theories of gender, sexuality and Anglocentricity. |
