Monday 11 July 2005, 19.30-20.30

Sponsor:The International Anchoritic Society
Organiser:Liz Herbert McAvoy, Department of English Language & Literature, Swansea University
Moderator/Chair:Liz Herbert McAvoy, Department of English Language & Literature, Swansea University
Abstract

This session aims to examine the legacy of Ann Warren's formative work on English anchoritism and interrogate her findings in the light of more recent research within historical, literary and gender-study contexts. In particular, it aims to appraise the accuracies and/or inaccuracies of those paradigms of the anchoritic life as produced by Warren and earlier scholars such as Mary Rotha Clay, and discuss how the reception of her findings may have shifted, and will continue to shift, in the context of contemporary theories of gender, sexuality and Anglocentricity.
Participants include Susannah Mary Chewning (Union County College, New Jersey), Eddie Jones (University of Exeter), Paulette L'Hermite-Leclercq (Université de Paris IV - Sorbonne), Anneke B. Mulder-Bakker (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen), and Michelle Sauer (Minot State University, North Dakota).
