Abstract

Being an early medieval foundation, Paderborn has been an urban centre ever since the 8th century. As an Episcopal See the city kept reflecting the interference of secular and ecclesiastical power from the meeting of Pope Leo III with Charlemagne in 799 up to the present day, the consequence being that for almost every kind of institute offering source material for research there is a secular and an ecclesiastical institution. The session seeks to introduce the archiepiscopal museum, library, and archives, whose members also see about cultural goods in more than 750 parishes in the archdiocese, taking some examples for promising research interests as an example.
