Abstract

This is the first of four sessions to explore the idea of 'performance and the page'. Here, three papers consider the role of the manuscript compilers and the influence of layout on readers. We begin with Aditi Nafde's analysis of an 'oral' manuscript rendition of Chaucer through unusual page layout, before moving on to the juxtaposed presentation of different 'musics' in a Renart manuscript with Anne Ibos-Augé. We finish with one of the most famous journeys of the Middle Ages, that of the pilgrim in Dante's Commedia, where Anna Pegoretti proposes that the manuscript under scrutiny leads its readers on an apparently carefully designed journey of interpretation. The session offers insights into the mise-en-page of text, music, and image in manuscripts; a journey into the heart of writing and manuscript compilation.
