Abstract

Matthew Paris (fl. 1235-59) was one of the outstanding writers of history in the central Middle Ages, and an essential source for our understanding not only of English history, but that of Latin Christendom as a whole. Yet it has been more than 50 years since the last comprehensive study of Matthew's worldview, the method and context of his writing of history, had been published. This session will present recent approaches to Matthew Paris, and will sketch future lines of enquiry and questions of research. It will thus shed new light on one of the most significant witnesses for the intellectual, cultural, religious, political, and social history in a pivotal period of medieval European history.
