Abstract

We will explore the impact of the murder of Thomas Becket in the Plantagenet lands. We begin with the portrayal of Becket in late 12th-century chronicles, and how that perspective differs from the Lives and letters of the saint. Turning to the miracle collections, we will consider the negotiation of royal and saintly authority, in particular the tension between reprimand and respect for King Henry II. We will then explore the impact of the martyrdom outside England, specifically in Castile, where the activity of Henry II's daughter Eleanor provides some of the earliest evidence of the cult of St Thomas.
