Abstract

'The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there'. This session explores the dispersal of cultural characteristics across continents and across time periods. We start by examining the material and linguistic culture of a people in migration at the dawn of the Middle Ages. The succeeding paper then compares classical and medieval perceptions of marvel travelogues and topography, asking how marvels were conceptualised differently in antiquity and in the Middle Ages. Finally, we unravel the classical and contemporary Continental origins of the medieval gallant tradition in England and how these models were changed to suit English socio-political concerns.
