Session 199: From Aachen to Jerusalem and Back: Mediterranean Communications, Charlemagne's Survey of the Holy Land Churches, and Post-Roman Christianity in the Middle East

Monday 12 July 2010, 13.15-14.00

Introduction:Felicitas Schmieder, Historisches Institut, FernUniversität Hagen
Speaker:Michael McCormick, Department of History, Harvard University
Abstract

One of the early medieval Mediterranean's most neglected and extraordinary documents is the report of a fact-finding mission Charlemagne sent across the sea to survey the Christian church of the Holy Land. A roll of documents the missi dominici compiled there preserves the most detailed statistical portrait of the female and male personnel, monuments - including exact dimensions - and finances of any major Christian church province before the Domesday Book, and provides new insight into the trajectory of the Christian establishments in the Holy Land between Antiquity and the Crusades.
