Organiser:Chris Jones, Department of History, University of Canterbury, Christchurch
Moderator/Chair:Chris Jones, Department of History, University of Canterbury, Christchurch
Abstract

The Dominican scholar John of Paris is best known today for the tract On Royal and Papal Power, often considered a contribution to the dispute between Pope Boniface VIII and the French king Philippe IV. This session considers John's attitude towards kingship and focuses, in particular, on an idea for which he is often considered the first post-Classical exponent: the rejection of universal temporal monarchy in favour of a multiplicity of independent states. It forms part of the 'John of Paris: Beyond Royal and Papal Power' strand.
