Abstract

The early medieval Libri memoriales and other sources of liturgical commemoration transmit not only more than 100,000 names, but also thousands of indications concerning the secular or ecclesiastical status of name-bearers or whole groups of persons. After more than four decades of historical research based on sources of this kind, 'Memorialforschung' still remains a challenge, especially as regards prosopographical research orientated towards social history. With regard to this challenge, the papers of this session will focus on different aspects of prosopography, social status, and social representation that are perceptible and distinguishable in the sources.
