Abstract

The concepts of poverty and wealth in the exempla and sermons of Caesarius of Heisterbach open this session. St Benedict's advice on the care of pilgrims could be interpreted quite differently for different social classes visiting the guesthouse of a medieval Cistercian abbey in Wales, and Welsh manuscripts and libraries – often believed to be limited and poor – may be shown to demonstrate hidden riches.
