Abstract

Early medieval royal charters were a form of communication in which centre was represented to locality. This session explores the techniques of such representation from both ends: Trousdale's study of the charters of King Eadred (946-55) examines the diplomatic profile of a neglected king of England; Kikuchi's study of the honorifics used by Carolingian rulers assesses the possible significance of such small details of presentation in political context and Jarrett examines royal power in practice through the window of documents from Carolingian Girona showing royal 'missi' there in the 9th century.
