Abstract

Professor Tom Shippey pioneered the study of Old English 'poems of wisdom and learning'. This session honors his efforts by exploring the social and spiritual economy of poems of wisdom and learning in both Old and Middle English. Paper -a addresses the Middle English 'Proverbs of Hendyng' and their preoccupation with money, goods, and property. Paper -b calls into question Anglo-Saxon economy of fate as it relates to the events portrayed in 'The Battle of Maldon'. Paper -c explores the exchange of social and spiritual currency in Old and Middle English debate poetry.
