Abstract

The papers in this session will look at various themes of the history of Norman southern Italy. Paul Brown's paper will assess the martial contribution of the 'others' in the Norman ranks, with particular attention paid to tactical roles and troop types. The paper by Isabella Bolognese will aim to contribute to our understanding of Norman social structures in Southern Italy making use of the extensive primary sources available from the Montevergine archives. Finally, Joanna Drell will focus on perceptions of the Regno in the literature of 13th- and 14th-century northern-Italian scholars.
