Abstract

This session explores the images of poverty and prosperity through a variety of lenses. David Green will analyze labour legislation, sumptuary laws, and game laws to explore how the state seeks to control social mobility and the appearance of social mobility in the period of economic turmoil after the plague. Sally Dixon-Smith will explore the image of poverty in 13th-century kingship. April Harper will be analyzing the role of clothing as a social indicator and symbol of class conflict in tales of illicit sex.
