Abstract

The participants in this panel are engaged in producing for Corpus Christianorum an edition of a previously unpublished Commentary on Lamentations written by the celebrated English historian William of Malmesbury around 1130; this is William's only foray into biblical exegesis, but it is in many ways characteristic of its many-sided author. The book should be in the press by the time of the Congress. The speakers will provide an introduction to this new and interesting text, discussing its purpose and historical background, the sources and style that it employs, and the thought-world that it reveals.
