Abstract

The Pseudo-Isidorian decretals have proven to be a forgery of long-lasting interest. This session will investigate both their origins and their later use, in order to better appreciate how the forged decretals entered into the medieval legal consciousness, particularly in England via the Collectio Lanfranci. At its heart are questions of date and authorship, alongside concerns over how later audiences were able to manipulate and reuse the supposedly 'authoritative' texts that frequently found their way into high medieval canonical collections.
