Abstract

When looking at food supply for medieval cities, the special role of their immediate hinterland is often underestimated. These two panels take a comparative perspective on city-hinterland relations, examining cases of food supply from medieval Central Europe, Upper Yemen, and late medieval Dalmatia. With an interdisciplinary focus, the papers will concentrate on the control and organization of food distribution, charitable endowments and ritual aspects of food to show how food was used in the construction of urban communities that also reached beyond the city walls.
