Abstract

This session includes papers on different canonical works from the early Middle Ages. From an awareness of the fact that these sources can shed light on matters beyond the dispensing of justice or the imposing of discipline on Christian communities, the speakers will not only discuss the individual works and their peculiarities, but - more importantly - the influence of canon law in the development of western thought and culture. In these papers there is specific focus on the construction and perception of (textual) authority and the interplay between canon and secular law.
