Abstract | The session on the martial horse and rider highlights the wide range of military and paramilitary practices dependent on the horse and human collaboration. The session tracks the evolution of equestrian martial practices from the early medieval period to the end of the Middle Ages across a range of geographic regions, venturing beyond Europe into the north of Africa, where mounted warriors were exposed to foreign experiences and influences. The papers highlight the importance of horsemanship to medieval knights and soldiers and refer to techniques that originated with particular cultures and could be regarded as 'other' elsewhere in Europe. |
