Abstract

The 15th century in Catalonia was a period of changes that affected many aspects of its inhabitants' lives. During that period of time, Catalonia saw the end of a royal dynasty and the arrival of a new one, both events packed with controversy and conflict. What also became evident was the slow but sure progression towards modern times and the problems that some institutions had to cope with. The aim of this session is to take a different approach to 15th-century city life, with a special focus on how common people were affected by all these situations and how local institutions transformed to confront new challenges. Through the three papers included in the session, we will be able to learn about the limits of medieval charity and welfare institutions (P. Bridgewater), the management of the Hospital de la Santa Creu (J. Marcé), and allegiances' problems during civil war times (L. Miquel).
