Abstract

Religion and Medicine were intertwined in many ways in the Middle Ages, perhaps best seen in the interpretation of the relationships between body and soul and between moral and other forms of authority. Bonnie Millar uses the sounds evoked by the Lay of Sir Orfeo to understand how the soul and body interacted when faced by death. Gordon Whyte uses the remarkable figure of Alfanus I of Salerno to explore how Alexandrian medical concepts of the body and soul challenged a Latin culture centered on Augustine's teachings in the late 11th century.
