Abstract

This is the first of two sessions on the Alans, a people of the steppe and North Caucasus, and the state they founded there, Alania- one of the least-known of all medieval kingdoms. One of the more remarkable facets of Alan culture were the repeated movements of both individuals and wider groups. Moreover, the outside world exerted a powerful influence on Alania, most notably in the state adoption of Christianity. This session aims to provide insights into how far we can understand Alania through these processes of interaction, and how far Alania provides an exception to these processes at large.
