Abstract | This session will explore the concept of 'Otherness' in the high and late medieval Church in Ireland, employing case studies from male and female monasticism, in addition to considering doctrinal differences that became manifest during the period. The papers will draw on documentary evidence to assess how concepts such as sanctuary and abjuration operated and will address the doctrinal tensions between the western Catholic and eastern Orthodox Armenian churches. The 'otherness' of Gaelic female religious in medieval Ireland will also be explored, with reference to both Gaelic and Anglo-Irish spheres of influence. |
