Abstract

Paper -a seeks to ascertain the role of Edward III's earls in providing the crucial function of counsel within a changing political and institutional landscape, and thus to investigate a key issue in mid-14th-century political and constitutional practice. Paper -b engages with recent debates about the role of the household knight in local political society, focussing on the reign of Edward III. Paper -c traces the pattern of Henry IV's appointments to the most significant offices in the Principality of South Wales. It will demonstrate that Henry removed those men who had served in important offices in Richard II's reign and that they were replaced by men of Lancastrian sympathy.
