Abstract

This session proposes to revisit and pave the way ahead for research in religious material culture in medieval Denmark. It discusses the role of materiality and physicality in the religious experience and practice of medieval people, and investigates the uses of material objects, spaces, and bodies employed to make the sacred tangible, hereby acting as mediators between the earthly and the heavenly spheres. As a result, this session stresses the significance of the sensory, dramatic enactment that moved soul, body, heart and mind of the medieval faithful.
