Abstract

The rolls of accounts of the Savoyard castellanies - administrative-territorial units - testify to a process of institutional reform from the middle of the 13th century and provide ample socio-economic data on the communities of the Western Alps. The papers in this session demonstrate how the vast but under-explored Savoyard fiscal-administrative archive can be analysed so as to shed new light on communications between the central administration and the count's local agents, the castellans; on the workings of comital justice; and on the logistics and social impact of the Savoyard military administration.
