Abstract

The Nordic fragment collections provide us, among other things, with a unique view of one of the least well-preserved corners of medieval book culture: liturgical parish books. This round table discussion will address the work that still needs to be done to make these unique sources accessible to international scholarship. Some issues that will be raised are the benefits of a digital format for re-stitching/reconstructing books, the void that exists in scholarship due to uneven access to the fragments, as well as artefact survival and its influence on collective memory. Finally, the importance of a greater collaboration will be discussed.

Participants include Olli-Pekka Kasurinen (University of Helsinki), Synnøve Myking (Universitetet i Bergen), Erik Niblaeus (Durham University), Sara Ellis Nilsson (Malmö Högskola), and Åslaug Ommundsen (Universitetet i Bergen).
