Abstract

This round table discussion will explore questions related to the status of (im)materiality in mystical-theological discourse in a variety of medieval places, times, and languages. Is the purpose of mystical discourse ultimately to lead to the annihilation of the body and the self in union with God or is there abiding value to the material world? The participants in the round table will briefly address this and related questions from various methodological perspectives before opening the debate up to all those present.

Participants include Rob Faesen (KU Leuven), William P. Hyland (University of St Andrews), Amanda Langley (Queen Mary, University of London), and Lydia Shahan (KU Leuven).
