Abstract

In all three realms of the afterlife, Dante describes the landscape and spaces he encounters as meaningful. He invites the reader to compare his other-worldly descriptions of landscape to their earthly models through metaphors and similes. These landscapes convey meaning and help the reader to understand the condition of the souls and their particular location. He also asks the reader to compare repeated built and natural models and often subverts our expectations of a space. This strand explores interactions and interconnections with the built or natural landscape in Dante Alighieri's Commedia and considers how these landscapes shape the experiences of the souls in the otherworld.
