Session 1404: Early Encounters with the Medieval: Diversity, Children's Publishing, and Creative Collaborations - A Round Table Discussion

| Abstract | This round table session is linked to a new project on 'Retelling Medieval Tales' which brings together children's authors, illustrators, and storytellers to adapt, (re)tell, and (re)imagine medieval narratives in order to explore the variety of attitudes towards race in the Middle Ages, confront the realities of medieval racism, and challenge modern Eurocentric ideas about the Middle Ages (https://retellingmedievaltales.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk). In this session, we will present this initiative and discuss the practicalities of engaging with creative professionals and the children's publishing industry in this way; the ethics surrounding the processes of adaptation and translation involved; and the factors (e.g. disciplinary, linguistic, or curriculum-based) affecting how we can engage with young audiences about race in this period and the idea of a more global Middle Ages.
