Abstract

This panel analyses the typologies, conditions, and sources of tournaments. Marina Viallon will analyse the emergence of the 'knights errant' tournament, a style of pas d'armes popular in France which was heavily influenced by chivalric literature. Samuel Bradley will explore the impact of weather on late medieval Italian jousts, as well as the use of Piazza Santa Croce as the seemingly primary tournament site in Florence. Eleanor Wilkinson-Keys will discuss the Smithfield tournament of 1467 and consider how descriptions of horse barding, along with arms and armour, contribute to the readers' understanding of 15th-century tournament events.
