Abstract

A recurring challenge for anyone studying religious change throughout history is the discrepancy between the dynamics of life in general, and the static nature of the texts describing the developments generally acknowledged as 'reforms' - even if such acknowledgement usually happens after the fact. Drawing upon a broad range of expertise and international scholarly traditions, and building upon the papers in the session series 'Benedict of Aniane Reconsidered', the participants in this panel will discuss several strategies for dealing with this challenge, ranging from the close reading of narratives recording reforms, to a return to the manuscripts that are the ultimate carriers of change.

Participants include Alison Beach (Ohio State University / University of St Andrews), Albrecht Diem (Syracuse University), Johanna Jebe (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen), Melissa Kapitan (University of Kentucky, Lexington), and Steven Vanderputten (Universiteit Gent).
