Abstract

With the context of the crusades as its backdrop, this panel will explore the theme of strategy in three different ways. Rabei Khamisy will examine the strategic aims and considerations of Baybars, and how these guided his campaigns against the Franks. Michael Fulton will investigate the Norman-Sicilian campaign against Alexandria in 1174, specifically the strategy of the attacking Normans and Saladin's propagandists after the attack. Steve Tibble will then tackle the question of whether the Franks of the kingdom of Jerusalem developed and implemented a strategy of repression against the local population of Palestine in the 12th century.
