Abstract

The papers in this session will approach the study of medieval monasteries via different kinds of sources. Paper 1 uses a new transcription of Kirkstead Abbey's cartulary to provide new insights into the processes of relocation of a monastery and examines how the monks attempted to memorialise their early history in their cartulary. The aim of paper 2 is to explore, on the basis of the extant documentation, the relationship between the rulers of Wales and the Cistercians, how each benefitted from the other and how politics could impact on the monasteries. And paper 3 will suggest ways in which Minecraft can be used to get children, rather than adult developers, thinking about the medieval built environment, using the example of the Augustinian priory of Merton.
