Abstract | This session will focus on private wars, a central theme to understand Late Medieval Basque Country and its evolution. Feuding between families was a common thing in both urban and rural areas, which often evolved into full-scale wars that shaped social relations and political development. The first paper will explore private feuding and border violence involving one of the most prominent noble families of Late Medieval Basque Country: the Lazcano's. The second paper will analyse the military organization and recruitment mechanisms used by the Basque nobility for their feuds. The final paper will discuss how Basque private wars were fought, focusing on the strategies and tactics employed and quantifying the actual dimension of military actions and casualties. |
