Abstract

Both the North and South Caucasus served as zones for cultural appropriation and reinterpretation throughout the medieval period. The papers in this session will explore these processes, with particular attention being paid to cultural transformations taking place within the Caucasus itself. Erga Shneurson's paper will explore the selective appropriation of Near Eastern themes in early Georgian monumental sculpture; and Nusret Burak Öszoy's paper will explore the interaction between local Armenian and Georgian powerbrokers and the Roman and Sassanian Empires.
