Abstract

This is the final discussion of the strand dealing with frontiers and crossroads in Italy and the Mediterranean in the early Middle Ages. It will feature all the organisers of the strand on the podium, as well as special guests. We will look back at four full sessions tackling such diverse topics as political, natural, or environmental borders, the transmission of relics, the Italian south as a frontier zone, or textual and language borders. We will address questions like: how was Italy perceived - and when can we detect changes? What were the borders within the peninsula and how did they differ from those at the edge of our space? And we hope for a lot of interesting questions that have newly arisen during the session and from you, the audience!

Participants include Thomas Brown (University of Edinburgh), Francesca Dell'Acqua (Università degli Studi di Salerno), Christopher Heath (Manchester Metropolitan University), Edoardo Manarini (Università degli Studi di Torino), and Giulia Zornetta (Università Roma Tre).
