| Abstract | This strand of three sessions will examine various aspects of Anglo-Scottish relations from the 12th to the 16th centuries. This first session will look at cross-border relations, examining: how gradations of borderland in the north of England are revealed by the differing political, marital, and military relationships that the de Vescys of Alnwick and de Lacys of Pontefract cultivated with Scotland; wool smuggling in the North East through use of legal records, paying particular attention to the port towns of Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed; and how the normative aspects of border conflict and its resolution expose the shared culture and values of a cross-border society. |
