Abstract

This strand of three sessions will examine various aspects of Anglo-Scottish relations from the 12th to the 16th centuries. This second session will look at aspects of lordship, allegiance, and identity during a period when the rule of the Scottish borderlands was disputed between the English and Scottish Crowns, examining: the maintenance and imposition of Scottish lordship in the contested border lordship of Annandale; the public expression and enforcement of contested regnal, national, and cross-border allegiances and loyalties; and comparison of the views of Scots from the English side of the border, through two Northumbrian chronicles.
