Abstract

This panel examines boundaries between closely-related medieval Nordic languages both linguistically and geographically, and the implications this has for how we understand the shared and differentiated characteristics of such languages. Mikaelsdóttir examines the morphological relationships between Old Icelandic and Old Norwegian, while Vrieland considers early medieval evidence for the interaction between Faroese and Danish. McDonald considers possible loanword evidence in Scottish Gaelic that might point to Faroese and Norn influence, rather than Old Norse.
