Abstract

The experience of exile is a central theme in Dante Alighieri's later works. The poet, indeed, is the exile by definition: in a literal sense, as he was obliged to leave Florence in 1302, after the defeat of the White Guelfs; but also in a literary sense, as he becomes the peregrinus in his Commedia. The panel proposes to examine how the experience of exile played a crucial role in Dante's later production, and how the condition of exile becomes a structural element for his poetry and life.
