Abstract | Various different forms of artistic expression can convey and mediate a broad range of emotions. This panel looks at different ways that emotions can be conveyed through marginalised art in manuscripts. Hand's paper investigates the depiction of despair in the marginalia of The Prayer Book of Bonne of Luxembourg and its effect on the readers. Orgad’s paper, meanwhile, explores violent pictorial scenes in Passover Haggadot in order to decipher their meaning and function. Peters's talk focuses on the visual portrayal of legal emotion, specifically that in the images of a trial, an execution, and the figure of Justitia in a manuscript of the German monk Gregor Reisch's Margarita philosophica. |
