Abstract

This session is part of the panel on Byzantine Bodies. It considers 'The Byzantine Body Politic and the Cartography of Power'. It focuses on strategies of shaping collective identities in Byzantium through figurative approaches toward the body. It addresses gendered aspects of the political, social, cultural, material, and textual body. It will also explore the disciplining normative narratives of later Roman society and their contribution to the construction of the androcentric hierarchy of power in Byzantium.
