Abstract

This panel starts from the middle, investigating the indeterminate and in-between in Middle English texts and manuscripts. Beginning from the troubled and productive centre and bringing together Margery Kempe and the anonymous authors of romance, we explore the entanglements of hegemony and resistance within Middle English textual culture. The papers focus on Margery Kempe's midlife crying and its roots in her travels between England and Jerusalem as well as aspiration and indeterminacy in The Awntyrs off Arthure and Sir Orfeo.
