Abstract

Medieval translations are a unique facet of medieval culture. Both transmitters of texts and reflections of (inter-)cultural demand, they offer a rare insight into hermeneutical practice. These two sessions aim to explore both internal crises affecting translations, and translations as a propagandistic tool or response to external moments of crisis, across a broad geographical and chronological scope. This first session will cover topics surrounding the Romance languages and territories. Firstly, Worth will explore the linguistic identity crises of the early-medieval Lombards and Romano-Lombard ethnogenesis, through a consideration of the use of Germanic names in the context of the disappearance of Langobardic. Savard-Déry, will analyse the 13th-century French translation of the Heroides, especially the context of its production, for example, the expectations of the sponsors. Next, López Martínez will consider the printed editions of Castilian translations of classical texts in Seville between the 15th and 16th centuries, focusing especially on «Tulio de officijs y de senectute en romance» (Sevilla, 1501). Finally, Smith will examine how Costanza de Castilla and Isabel de Villena confronted the crisis point of misogynistic debates through their translations and reinterpretations of Latin works.
