Abstract

Historians have long struggled with the question of what bound medieval society together. The concept of allegiance permeates current scholarship and understandings of the Middle Ages, yet it has been under-discussed in its own right as a bond, emotion, asset, identity, duty or potential dilemma. This session will rectify this by exploring allegiances during struggles for authority and deposition. This theme will be explored in the context of oaths in thirteenth-century Byzantium and Latin Romania, the role of Edward II in the deposition of Edward II, and networks and allegiances in the Cologne Episcopal Feud.
