Abstract

The aim of this session is to explore changes in medieval Welsh law, literacy, and learning in response to conflict and change. Paper 1 will discuss the continuation and change in Welsh inheritance law following the Edwardian Conquest in the late thirteenth-century, as an example of continuation of Welsh culture in the face of political change. Paper 2 will explore the later writings of Gerald of Wales and discuss how his text 'De Principis Instuctione' was a response to Gerald's attempts to further his ecclesiastical career.
