Abstract

This session is aimed at early career researchers who are thinking about publishing their first academic monograph and seeking advice on how the process works, or how they can get the best out of their experience. The panel members will offer different perspectives on the process and is made up of: one ECR who is currently writing their proposal and first book chapters; one academic who has completed their first book and is now seeking to write their second; one senior academic who brings perspectives on how writing monographs might influence your career trajectory, and a manager from a field-leading publishing house. The panel will offer their reflections (not rules) on the writing of monographs, exploring questions such as (but not limited to):

  • What is the purpose of an academic monograph?
  • Is my PhD dissertation a good fit for an academic monograph?
  • When should I start thinking about proposing my idea for a book?
  • Where should I publish it?
  • How does the book proposal process work, and what makes a good/bad proposal?
  • What is the best way to actually write (and finish!) my book?

    After reflections from the panel, the floor will be open for audience questions.
