Abstract

These two sessions bring together diverse new work on the rich history of letter writing within and emanating from the early medieval insular world. The papers will invite us to consider epistolary culture from a variety of differing perspectives and frameworks, attesting to the enormous potential of early medieval letters and letter-collections for intellectual enquiry. Themes that will be explored include diplomacy, multilingualism, identity, theology, social relationships, textual transmission, archival practice and, not least, crisis.
